What is a base layer?
The most effective way to dress for outdoor activities is to use the '3 layer system' with clothing
Base Layer - the first layer which is worn next to the skin
Mid Layer - the next layer which should offer warmth. Polar fleece or woollen garments are best. Avoid garments made from fabrics that absorb moisture.
Outer Layer - this should be windproof and waterproof. Choose garments that are breathable or the wicking performance of the base layer will be reduced.
How does a base layer work?
The job of a base layer is to move moisture away from your skin and in lower temperatures retain body heat. To achieve this it is essential that a base layer has the ability to wick away the moisture. If it cannot, then all your clothing will start to get damp and cold against your skin. The base layer should be fitted close to the body. This is to ensure maximum skin contact to maximise the fabrics ability to wick away moisture from th skin and retian body heat.
We have tow types of base layer here.
1) Thermal - warm and snug. Ideal for walking in cold conditions.
2) Performance - quick moisture wicking base layer. More suited for when you are going to sweat far more due to activity.
